Cedar roof shingles come in 3 main grades, plus a special undercoursing shingle used mainly for cedar sidewalls. Cedar shingle roofing grades are:

Centrigrade Cedar Shingles

Number 1 Blue Label cedar shingles are the top-grade shingles in cedar roofing for roofs and sidewalls. They are 100% heartwood, 100% clear and 100% edge grain.

Number 2 Red Label cedar shingles are a good grade of cedar shingles that can be used for many different applications. They are available in flat grain and limited sapwood.

Number 3 Black Label cedar shingles are utility grade cedar roofing used for economy applications and secondary building.

Number 4 Undercoursing are utility grade cedar shingles used for undercoursing of double coursed cedar sidewalls. They are not used as a started course for roofs and are not a cedar roofing material.
