Roof flashing is a thin material, usually galvanized steel or aluminum that professional roofers use to direct water away from critical areas of the roof, wherever the roof plane meets a vertical surface like a wall or a dormer. Flashing is installed to surround roof features, such as vents, chimneys and skylights.
Kickout flashing is a type of flashing that diverts water away from the exterior walls of a building and into the gutter system. It's installed at the point where the roof and wall meet.
Wall flashings are water impervious membranes, metals, plastics, or other durable materials installed inside walls during construction. Its job is to collect water penetrating the exterior through cracks and direct the water back outside through designated drainage areas.
Counter-flashing is designed to prevent moisture from entering behind the vertical flange of headwall or sidewall flashing.
A cricket or saddle is a ridge structure designed to divert water on a roof around the high side of a large penetration, typically a skylight, equipment curb, or chimney. In some cases, a cricket can be used to transition from one roof area to another.
