Why Is A Roof Cricket Important?

Chimneys are a vulnerable area of the roof, as they run through the whole roof into the living space below. It takes careful flashing to properly protect a chimney, including a roof cricket or roof saddle. While not all building codes require chimney crickets, most professional roofers you speak with will strongly recommend them. Why is a roof cricket recommended for chimneys?

Crickets are essential to create proper water run off from behind or the sides of a chimney and some other roof penetrations/ structures and wall interfaces. Seipp Roofing has developed a standard to building crickets behind chimneys 24" wide or bigger and any other areas requiring water diversion.

Without a proper cricket in the required locations, moisture will find its way under the roof components resulting in damage to the decking and even the structure.
